Year 6 SEND Transition
Waseley SEND and Pastoral staff have been working with our primary schools to gain a deeper understanding of each Year 6 learner starting at Waseley Hills High School. We have also had the privilege of meeting some of our Year 6 SEND learners, along with their families, to gain a deeper understanding of our young learners and to plan support strategies for September. Many of our Year 6 SEND and Vulnerable learners have been invited to our Additional Transitions mornings and full days to tour around Waseley Hills High School, meet our staff, visit the Learning Support Centre, Sensory Room, MAB and the Hub. They will also learn about the processes in school. We have planned many team-building skills to support making and maintaining friendships, but also for our learners to ask questions or go through their worries, which we will be able to support with. We have arranged many sports activities, creativity activities, in addition to literacy activities, where Ms Johnson will be supporting students with reading books and understanding the importance of reading for their academic development and progress. Ms McLeod will also have interventions with our SEND and Vulnerable learners on the 30th June to go through a journey of different emotions and the support available for management of these emotions. Our sixth-formers and current SEND learners will also speak to our Year 6 to go through their journey at Waseley and what worked for them - this should help assist with peer-buddying, but also for Year 6 to be positive about the Waseley environment. We look forward to seeing our learners on the next couple of Mondays, followed by 30th June, 1st July and 2nd July.
Additional Team-Building Day
Our Year 6s, arriving from seven different primary schools, were welcomed for a full day tranistion. We throughly enjoyed our "Meet and Greet" time where we all learnt more about each other (we certainly were amazed by how many different TV programmes and music younsters enjoy!). Our new learners were exvcptional during the team-builfing exercises; which included football sports, joining pipes to run through a tennis ball and being able to build the tallest tower (without it collapsing). Students also enjoyed our canteen food to gain energy, which was much needed to explore our new build. Our Year 6s also had fun time on the Kahoot activities, followed by an informative afternoon in the importance of mental wellbeing and what it means in our life.
We have enjoyed our second day of transition with our SEND learners where our Year 6 learners have continued to explore our existing and new building, along with exploring our Learning Support Centre, Sensory Room and MAB. We have also had the privilege to celebrate the birthday of our Year 6 student - where we all celebrated with singing Happy Birthday and enjoying cakes from the WHHS canteen, which had been a great hit!
